Holm Oak Avenue 1908 (Country Life, p. 529)

Thank you to everyone who donated to enable the Lutyens Holm Oak Avenue, we are delighted that all of the trees have now been allocated. There may be other opportunities to help to plant a special tree at Hestercombe, if this is of interest please get in touch.

We are delighted that the trust was recently successful in gaining planning permission to reinstate Lutyens and Jekyll's avenue of twenty Holm oak trees on the west side of the formal garden. The trust has also acquired vacant possession of the land, enabling the avenue to be replanted as originally designed in 1904.

As part of the continuing restoration of the estate, twenty Holm Oak trees (Quercus ilex) will be planted in winter 2023 to fully restore this lost treasure. This exciting new feature of the garden will play an important role in replacing a number of ash trees that have been lost due to ash dieback.

Restoring this cool and shady avenue will recreate an important element of the original design. These decorative evergreen trees with their striking silvery trunks will allow framed views of the wider countryside.

The avenue will be complemented by more than one hundred native tree saplings that will be planted on the wider estate to provide valuable habitat for Hestercombe's abundant wildlife.

Tree planting can make a wonderful gift as well as a special memorial. We invite you to purchase one of only twenty trees to mark an occasion, remember a loved one, or simply to support the restoration and wildlife.

You may attend the planting, even help if you wish, and a permanent record of all contributors will be available. A record of the donation and dedication will be recorded in the Book of Remembrance held in the entrance of Hestercombe House.

There may be other opportunities to help to plant a special tree at Hestercombe, if this is of interest please contact us.
