The Portman Family and Their Estate exhibitionexplores the fascinating history of the Hestercombe estate and its transformation under the ownership of the Portman family.
In 1872, the estate was purchased by the 1st Viscount Portman, marking the end of almost 500 years of Warre family ownership. Lord Portman completely renovated the house, giving it a grand Victorian makeover that included a porte cochere and an elaborate water tower, typical of the period’s picturesque style.
In 1904, further embellishments were made, including the addition of the Formal Garden designed by renowned architect Edwin Lutyens and planting schemes by Gertrude Jekyll.
After Mrs. Portman’s passing in 1951, the house served as the headquarters for the Somerset Fire Brigade for over 60 years. In 2013, the Hestercombe Gardens Trust acquired the property, reopening it to the public in 2014.
This exhibition offers a glimpse into the legacy of the Portman family and the lasting impact they had on the estate.
Open daily, 11am-4pm on the Ground Floor of Hestercombe House.
Entry to Hestercombe House is by gardens admission only.
